Better than a New Year’s Resolution! One week into the New Year and many of us our still excited about our Resolutions. According to www.statisticbrain.com, 45% of Americans will make a New Year’s Resolutions but only 8% are successful in achieving their resolution.
A New Year’s Resolution is defined as a promise that you make to yourself, of course, on the New Year. Easy to break when it is not a daily habit that has been formed. So what is better than a resolution? How about a Focusing Question that becomes a way of life?
Better than a resolution mindset comes from Gary Keller and Jay Papasan in the book “The One Thing” where Gary shares the one question that he asks himself when he wakes up, when he goes to work and when he goes home. This one statement from the book has become my motto I repeat every day, it serves as a reminder, to keep my goals and priorities always in the forefront. So, here it is from Chapter 11: The Success Habit “What is the ONE Thing I can do such that doing it everything will be easier or unnecessary?”
You can apply is to your spiritual life, physical health, personal life, key relationships, job, business, and financial life.
If you are looking for a career change or new job, what is the ONE THING you can do today to make the realty? We all hate filling out applications, searching job boards, writing cover letters, but, if you do that first, as the book states “start with the big stuff,” you will find all the rest come into place while reducing the stress of your job search.
But don’t stop there, take a look at each area and determine what is the ONE THING in each of these that will improve your personal and professional life? If is it physical health, do the ONE THING to make that better. You will find the energy and new self-confidence roll into other aspects of your life. Is it more time with the family? Put the time on your calendar as an appointment that you cannot break. Is it do grow your business? What is the ONE THING that you should tackle first that will have the most impact on your success? I think you get the point.
This is a great book for anyone wanting to refocus their life! Even though Gary Keller is the founder of the largest real estate company, TheONEThing applies to anyone wanting to make a change in their life. So, what is the ONE THING you can do today such that doing it everything will be easier or unnecessary?
